+ I use the xorg-edgers repository and the latest update broke my X. When
+ my system boots, I see my login screen. But it disappears almost
+ immediately.

  I'm talking about xserver-xorg-video-intel
  2:2.7.99.902+git20090716.a1e6abb5-0ubuntu0sarvatt~jaunty
+
+ i accidently installed libdrm-radeon1, but i removed that one after X
+ crashed, i thought this was causing the problem, but after reoving the
+ radeon package and reinstalling libdrm-intel1 and xserver-xorg-video-
+ intel. X still failed to start. I was also unable to switch to another
+ terminal. I had to edit the kernel line in Grub to get to a root shell
+ and edit xorg.conf

  I added
  Section "Device"
      Identifier "Configured Video Device"
      Driver "intel"
      Option "Tiling" "false"
      Option "FramebufferCompression" "False"
  EndSection
  to my xorg.conf

  and
  nopat enable_mtrr_cleanup i915.modeset=1
to my menu.lst between 'generic' and 'root' to clear out some bugs with my
gma945

i got X back by specifieing "vesa" in the xorg.conf
