This problem can be duplicated by: 1. go to system->preferences-> Preferred Applications 2. in the web browser dropdown, choose "Custom" 3. type in a command such as "/usr/bin/firefox-3.5 %s" (or whatever you choose) 4. click 'close' 5. open a link in another application (such as thunderbird or pidgin) which uses gnome's preferred applications. It will use the specified custom command, as expected. 6. Go to system->preferences->Preferred Applications. The dropdown selection is still "custom", but the command is now blank.
