I have this identical problem with my Kubuntu install on an HP Compaq
DC7800. My network works fine, but it doesn't show up in this tool.

My original /etc/network/interfaces has a little more in it:

# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface
auto eth0
#iface eth0 inet dhcp

I've been trying to manually configure it, but without much success.
