I did an upgrade from jaunty to karmic, and did not hit this problem.
The current version is a bit newer (2.10.1-0ubuntu2). There's nothing
obvious in its preinst script that would indicate failure.

If you can reproduce this, could you run the preinst script with the -x
option so we have a chance to see where it fails?

Failing that, I'm afraid there's not much we can do to debug this. The
DpkgTerminalLog doesn't actually have any useful information apart from
the bit that says that it is the preinst script that failed. Because of
that, if no new information can be found, I'll close this bug report in
a week.
