I came across the same problem after accidentally starting the backup
without having the backup media mounted. Finding the tricky space is
tricky since you have to unmount some devices in order to see the
missing files. For example, I backup on an external hard drive mounted
at /media/sdb1. The backups are in /media/sdb1/Backups. When I started a
backup without having /dev/sdb1 mounted, the data still goes to
/media/sdb1/Backups written on the root partition. When I mount
/dev/sdb1, I no longer see the contents of /media/sdb1 as on / but the
mounted one, so it took me a while to find the missing space. You should
analyze your root (e.g. with baobab), however beforehand don't forget to
unmount all extra media.
