I came across the same problem after accidentally starting the backup without having the backup media mounted. Finding the tricky space is tricky since you have to unmount some devices in order to see the missing files. For example, I backup on an external hard drive mounted at /media/sdb1. The backups are in /media/sdb1/Backups. When I started a backup without having /dev/sdb1 mounted, the data still goes to /media/sdb1/Backups written on the root partition. When I mount /dev/sdb1, I no longer see the contents of /media/sdb1 as on / but the mounted one, so it took me a while to find the missing space. You should analyze your root (e.g. with baobab), however beforehand don't forget to unmount all extra media.
