I think you may have nailed the problem exactly. I turn on the "save
after x turns" feature because I am paranoid. Perhaps the crashing
wasn't as random as I thought, but was occurring after I had played a
little and tried to save. I was assuming that the save file that was
produced was corrupt because it would crash my game 100% of the time if
I tried to load it again. I ended up regressing my copy to the version
packaged with Intrepid, which works just fine for me (for the time
being). I can not use the version rolled into Jaunty for exactly the
reason stated above.
