Ref comment #12. Agree that it may not be Ghostscript (I have the same issue on HP DeskJet 3650 and Karmic).
I reverted to jaunty versions of hplip, hpijs, foomatic and libpoppler. I still have the latest GhostScript (ghostscript 8.70.dfsg.1-0ubuntu1) installed and it is now printing okay. I have not had the chance to change (update) packages one by one to try to isolate.
