I also have this problem with amarok hogging the sound system.  I'm not
sure if it's related to having pulseaudio since I don't use it, my first
sound preference is plain alsa.  Of course libpulse0 and others are
installed since many packages depend on it.  One strange think is that
if I start amarok first then vlc after the sound is mixed together fine.
However, if I start vlc first then amarok, amarok takes over and I can't
hear vlc anymore.
