This turned out to be that my $HOME/.gstreamer-0.10 directory had the wrong permissions (660 instead of 755). Once I adjusted this everything was fine. I am not sure how this happened, but it would be nice if rhythmbox could report a more useful error message rather than simply aborting. I marked as triaged for now since the cause was known and a better error message is desired, but feel free to adjust as necessary.
