Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mplayer

As distributed by ubuntu for many versions (hardy and perhaps earlier),
including the current 2:1.0~rc3+svn20090426-1ubuntu4, gmplayer rapidly
and continuously displays pop-up error messages (often far too fast to
read) for trivial errors such as "frame dropped", "MV error", etc. This
makes gmplayer unusuable for a large number of media files and DVDs for
which it would otherwise be useful (and which mplayer without the GUI
plays fine). These errors should not be displayed but should instead be
sent to stdout. In fact, virtually every file I attempt to play with
the latest version sends such a flurry of pop-ups that gmplayer is
completely unusuable for video.

This bug was also detailed here as a "wish" over a year ago with no response
thus far...
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mplayer/+bug/198695

FYI, the workaround described there ("gmplayer -msglevel:all 0") is not
an effective solution because gmplayer seems to flash the video window
red when errors occur with that setting, even though the pop-ups stop.

It also states there that other distributors of mplayer do not have this
problem.
