Ok - I decided in favor of 9.10 and go to sleep later. vmlinuz-2.6.31-020631rc5-generic has the same issue. With the standard options "splash quiet" it shows now two error messages (DSC00062), but those messages are not the last when I hang without splash and noquiet (DSC00063).
