I've found also that using bios "optimized defaults" (and then changing to boot from cdrom) often helps with such video driver issues upon installing ubuntu/kubuntu, both for nVidia and ATi cards. At least, I have clear enough video to install files on some systems--and, without freezing on others. The bios may then may changed to better settings after the sys is well established and works well with preferred drivers. My problem may not have much to do with ubuntu/kubuntu versions after all....
