And just to add, I followed the recommendation to use knetworkmanager,
and indeed that is what is automatically started when logging in, but
still have no success.  knetworkmanager scans and lists all the wireless
networks in the area, including mine, but after entering the WEP hex key
and telling it to connect automatically, it does nothing.  I can click
on the systray icon and see my network set apart on the main menu now,
but clicking on it does nothing.  I get no response.  Killing
knetworkmanager and starting nm-applet works just fine though.
