My machine is 4 years old with an NVidia video card. Later on I
discovered other KDE apps that crashed and I've come to the conclusion
that one of the libraries that's installed by doing apt-get on the
updates is messed up.
I reinstalled Kubuntu from my DVD image and that worked fine. I then
commented out every line in sources.list except the DVD and security
lines and then did an upgrade. Everything worked OK. But when I
uncommented the updates lines ("for major bug fixes etc") then the
system went into a non-functional state.
