Things should work better for you without PulseAudio. You can completely remove it by purging the gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio and pulseaudio packages (with aptitude it would be : 'sudo aptitude purge gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio pulseaudio'). I do not plan xfce4-volumed to support PulseAudio for Karmic, as i'm waiting for the XFCE mixer to have full PulseAudio compatibility before.
