I was running the Arduino IDE (version 0017) - Note that this is not a package, but is provided by Arduino (http://arduino.cc/en/Main/Software). I was in the middle of running through a tutorial (http://www.ladyada.net/learn/arduino/lesson4.html) and I had compiled and sent the "Hello, world!" program to the Arduino controller while using the software's serial monitor to catch a response (all of this is described 1/3rd of the way down, in the above link).
