** Description changed:

  Using Ubuntu 9.04 AMD64
Package: OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (14.0-b08)
- I apologise for the poor details, but I am not a Java developer. I was
running the Arduino IDE (version 0017) - Note that this is not a package, but
is provided by Arduino (http://arduino.cc/en/Main/Software).

I was in the middle of running through a tutorial
(http://www.ladyada.net/learn/arduino/lesson4.html) and I had compiled and sent
the "Hello, world!" program to the Arduino controller while using the
software's serial monitor to catch a response (all of this is described 1/3rd
of the way down, in the above link). At this point, the program crashed and I
was left with two dumps [attached].
