I had a similar problem. There is a command line program in the repositories. Forgot its name. Search for *top* in the package manager.
-- I have continuous high cpu usage, always above 50% even with only system monitor running. Also at the top of my process list is often a nameless process that changes process id constantly though is alway shown to be 'sleeping'. This is true on both my laptop and desktop running Jaunty.
