No longer an issue for me as I have done several reinstalls and worked
around the issue. My problem seems that apt or synaptic somehow corrupts
some files during download, while if I download the same file from
http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/ as long as I install my dependencies
properly everything works out fine. I suspect a problem with apt
connecting to (esp 64bit) software sources/package repositories.
