Same problem with clean install of Kubuntu (AMD64) and (K)ubuntu
repository Nvidia driver.

I have compared the X.org log files at first boot (with problem
apparent) and subsequent X server restarts (problem goes away).
Interestingly in the first boot the Nvidia seems to initialised twice.
In subsequent restarts it gets initialised only once.

Attached is X.org log file of a first boot (with problem apparent).
