Yup, this seems to have been fixed now.

0) switch monitor on/boot/login/etc
1) plug my keyboard into my Dell monitor
2) open terminal on a second monitior and type - works ok
3) use sudo tail -f /var/log/monitor to monitor status of usb/etc
3) switch off Dell monitor
4) wait for syslog to log disconnects....
5) attempt to type - doesn't work as expected
6) switch on monitor again
7) see usb/hub messages, and also ''input" for Apple keyboard
8) attempt to type - works ok

I think this can be closed now, thanks.
