Public bug reported: I think Ubuntu Software Store should be based on/use Packagekit instead of gnome-app-install. I guess that would pretty much mean replace packagekit-gnome.
This would give us all the advantages of Packagekit with the functionality that this software is intended to bring. I think it is important for us to contribute to this project which is under rapid development and has gained much popularity and continues to do so. I also think Ubuntu Software Store will gain a lot more support from the community if it was based on/used Packagekit. Packagekit had strong support in Ubuntu Brainstorm and was looked forward too by many since it was marked in development since 8.10 on there. Packagekit already has many advantages over gnome-app-install and these will only continue to grow. By replacing packagekit-gnome with this will give Ubuntu that uniqueness which other Distros using PK lack. Kubuntu should also benefit from such a move since it already uses PK. If for whatever reason this software failed and we were to go to PK, or if PK advanced enough in a couple of years that it would make sense to switch to PK, then using PK now would make things so much easier for a transition should a time like that come. It makes so much sense to use PK and how this was left behind is beyond me. Work on this would progress so much better/faster too since we already have a PK team and now the Software Store team as well as upstream. I really believe this should be heavily considered even if it means delaying the integration of Software Store to Ubuntu. ** Affects: software-store (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Use Packagekit instead of gnome-app-install. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/423718 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
