Ubuntu 9.04, Sony Vaio VGN-SR39VN, sound problem.

I followed instructions on " Jaunty 9.04 Sound Solutions" at 
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1130384
to try and resolve a microphone problem.

Before I did so sounds played ok. Now the only sound output is a
crackle.

I tried reinstalling linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils but it makes
no difference.

Output from "lspci -v | less" is
