I have since noticed that it does not happen every time, but it's reasonablu common. It also occurs sometimes when the messages don't have attachments. The distro is Kubuntu Edgy patched current, and Thunderbird 1.5.0.9 from the distro packages (might have been 1.5.0.8 at the time I filed this, not sure).
