Public bug reported:

When I installed Ubuntu on my new HP Compaq 615, the default font
settings looked quite ugly. It was set to [Subpixel smoothing] and to
improve the looks I changed it to [Best shapes], which wasn't ideal but
it was definetly an improvement. After a few days I noticed the
[Details...] button in Appereance dialog and found out that when
[Subpixel smoothing] is set, than [Font hinting] is set to slight. After
I changed it to full, the font appereance improved incredibly.

So after installation Ubuntu should set the default font to Subpixel
smoothing and Full hinting. As for now it sets only Subpixel smoothing
with Slight hinting, which looks significantly worse, at least on my
notebook.
