I don't know why you do mail me about ubuntu switching to some in-house solution.
I've been discussing the missing debug info with the GNOME community for a while. We have talked a lot about it (blogs, mailing lists, GNOME summit), and then plan was use airbag library on client side to create minidumps and build a server infrastructure fetching packages+debuginfo and using airbag to populate minidumps files with nice rich debug information. I've talked to the Ubuntu community several times to join efforts in a cross-distribution/platform solution.
