I can report some progress :) The balance now stays in the position I set it to while changing volume using gnome-volume-control. It is however still reset to middle if I mute the volume by pulling the volume slider completely to the left. This does not happen if I enable/disable the "Mute" checkbox in gnome-volume-control.
