I have done a number of rebuilds from scratch and end up with the same results --- sent back to login screen if GNOME selected. Get limited use with gnome-panel. gnome-session sends me back to login screen. compiz also sends me back to the login screen.
I am using an AMD 3800+ with a HD3450 video card. For all practical purposes I have a useless system.
