Just installed Sept. 15 updates. The update locked up the computer at
'installing new version of config file /etc/cron.d/anacron...
On reboot I received the message 'interrupted dpkg run sudo dpkg --configure
-a'. I ran this and it finished OK.
On restart the system came up in terminal mode (no desktop). I reran sudo
apt-get update/upgrade; nothing happened.
Tried another restart 'sudo shutdown -r now' - no change (no desktop).
Tried an unclean shutdown, which has corrected problems in the past, but no
improvement; still no Desktop.
Tried reinstalling gnome with both apt-get and aptitude which only reinstalled
gnome-themes; still no Desktop.

Since Alpha 6 is due in a couple of days I'll wait for that and hope for some
improvement.
