Upon more investigation, it seems that the default rsyslog configuration
is incorrect for ec2:
/etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf:
daemon.*;mail.*;\
news.err;\
*.=debug;*.=info;\
*.=notice;*.=warn |/dev/xconsole
