Experiencing this issue just as of today. Not detecting the onboard nor the pci 
sound devices. Alsa detects them just fine:
 0 [Intel          ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel

                      SB Audigy 2 Platinum [SB0240P] (rev.4, serial:0x10021102) 
at 0xd000, irq 20

However pulseaudio only gives me a "Dummy Output". My pulseaudio version
is 0.9.17-0ubuntu1 from karmic/main.
