Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pmount

Auto-detection of the filesystem type does not work:

# pmount /dev/sdh1
NTFS signature is missing.
Failed to mount '/dev/sdh1': Invalid argument
The device '/dev/sdh1' doesn't seem to have a valid NTFS.
Maybe the wrong device is used? Or the whole disk instead of a
partition (e.g. /dev/sda, not /dev/sda1)? Or the other way around?

And ext4 is not supported:

# pmount -t ext4 /dev/sdh1
Error: invalid file system name 'ext4'

System info:

# lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu karmic (development branch)
Release: 9.10

# dpkg --list pmount
ii pmount 0.9.19-1
mount removable devices as normal user

The git main branch includes a patch for ext4 support:
