Unfortunately this machine is my only day-to-day development one and I can't afford to kill it again. This issue is definitely to do with the add on gfx card that comes with the board as now I have installed a Nvidia one it works fine. I have attached a lspci -vnvn but the offending gfx card isn't installed at the moment.
