I ran foul of this same bug. It would be useful to have at least an Ubuntu-specific readme in the doc directory so that you can easily determine why the program is not working.
I mind less having to search around to find a file to run than having to find out why a package simply won't run at all. That said, it would seem to be the most user-friendly option to have it run the sql script at install time.
