I am alos hanging on this problem interesting is that I can use xbindkeys to bind "xvidtune -next" to about any keyboard combination except for Control+Alt+KP_Add So the functionality is halfway there and halfway gone.
I'm using now the binding Control+Alt+plus and Control+Alt+minus which are the + and - keys on the normal keyboard.
