I've found another spreadsheet that also crashes, but contains less-
sensitive data—see the attachment.

It seems that the problem isn't the now() function, but that the data
ranges go to an arbitrarily-high row number.

Another spreadsheet I have, where the data ranges go to a slightly lower
row number, doesn't crash.

Creating a new spreadsheet in OOo 3.1 that goes up to a somewhat-larger
final row number doesn't cause the crash.
