The problem persists. I was previously (i.e. in jaunty and for a while
in testing karmic) perfectly able to suspend and resume without
problems.

Could it have to do with the line:
"/usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/55NetworkManager suspend suspend: Welcome to 
PulseAudio! Use "help" for usage information.

listed in the SleepLog.txt file?

It seems to pass through all the hooks with success, yet the hardware is
not turned off and resuming is not possible; the suspend led stays on,
no reaction to neither lid open, Fn button or power button (except
keeping it pressed 5 seconds for a brutal halt).

Is there anyone who can recreate this?
