Same here. I have a HP Probook with Mobility Radeon HD 4330. XV is unbearable and wrong scalining with compositing on (100% CPU usage on one core, mainly from Xorg). I have to use OpenGL for mplayer for better viewing experience, but side effect is blinking and audio skip (when switching window/desktop) I am using no-backfill patch and 8.620 from x -swat-updates ppa.
