Last night, my experience was similar to this bug description. Early this afternoon, I saw a work around in a comment on this bug, which I do not see now. I think that work around involved a command to ignore openoffice.org-filter-binfilter, but I do not remember it. After running that work around in Applications, Accessories, Terminal, I ran System, Administration, Synaptic Package Manager, Reload, Mark All Upgrades, Apply, which downloaded megabytes of apparently upgraded files, and reported another error, for which Google did not find any reference. A few minutes later, System, Administration, Synaptic Package Manager, Reload, Mark All Upgrades, Apply, which downloaded megabytes of apparently upgraded files, succeeded in installing release 9.10, Karmic Koala.
