I have the identical problem. It broke for me in Dec 06. Fiesty's 0.10.3-0.1 version has the same problem. Version 0.9-1 has a different, likely similar problem. 0.8-1 seems to be working ok, possibly because it does not need to do the work that upgrade_backups.py is performing. Haven't looked deeply at the code.
