I also have similar problem, it's a single core system, xorg processes uses all the idle CPU and desktop is quite slow to respond. I've upgraded from jaunty (to karmic beta, to be more accurate: the state of ubuntu repositories at october 4) where I hadn't got this problem. I'm using nvidia's binary driver which is in ubuntu repositories.
