Same in Herd 3. I think that i could locate the issue.
In /etc/vmware/locations i have this line: answer VNET_0_INTERFACE ath0 My ath0 is usually disconected. If i change this line to use eth0, i can run the vmware-player without issues. So, if the package installation ask the user to use an specific network adapter, this issue must be solved.
