Adriaan, Well, it just seems to me that this particular problem with the Dell BIOS has caused several differnet types of problems, and on the outset it would appear that this particular issue also falls into this category as well.
Also, it may be of interest to note that this same problem has been reported in the debian bug reports for the xserver-xorg-video-i810 as well. (see: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=407798). They seem to suggest trying another debian package "xserver-xorg- video-i810-modesetting" although it's currently under development. Some research shows that it's in the Ubuntu Feisty package tree...
