I have the same problems, same Ubuntu/Gajim versions. I did however
change the default python version to use, so /usr/bin/python is a link
to python2.5. Here are the traces I get when launching Gajim from a
terminal:

~ > gajim

[1]  + killed     gajim
~ > gajim

As you can see, in those 2 cases I had to kill it because the interface
was frozen.
