Temporary in Jaunty, when you see the grub screen go to the kernel you want to boot, type "e", go to the (I think 3rd) line containing the "quiet splash" and press "e" again, then add the argument and press enter, then "b".
Permanent "sudo vi /boot/grub/menu.lst" then add it to the commented line "defoptions=quiet splash".
