Leann, the problem lay elsewhere, and after playing 'round a bit, I finally managed half an hour ago to discover where. The kernel updates were indeed being installed, precisely as described above, but my machines - both of them ! - were trying to boot not from GRUB 1.97, but from the legacy GRUB 0.97. As soon as I re-upgraded to GRUB2, they started booting from the latest kernel update - presently 2.6.31-13.43. Sorry to have wasted your valuable time !...
