Scott, I went trough reported bugs before reporting this one and I think this is another problem. But maybe I'm wrong.
As for the initramfs: No, you aren't right. I have self compiled kernel (2.6.31.1) and don't use initramfs. The only change I made was downgrading the mountall package from 0.2.1 to 0.1.8. Are you sure it has nothing to do with Robert's SEGV? It seems similar to me.
