I'm at Boston Gnome Summit this weekend, but I'll look into this as soon
as I'm able to.

I don't remember where our Nautilus patch signals xsplash, and I'm not
all that surprised that it may be signaling from the wrong location.

I'm a bit surprised to hear about the gnome-panel being "barely loaded"
though.  I was pretty confident that our gnome-panel patch was correct.
I'll go back and look at it though.

Can you tell me approximately what type of hardware you're using (cpu,
disk), and can you estimate how much time there is from the point
xsplash begins fading out to the point where Nautilus and gnome-panel
are completely visible?
