I've encountered this bug on a brand new HP Mini 2140 trying to install both Jaunty 32bit desktop and UNR from their release ISOs/imgs.
The issue can be worked around by using either nosmp in the kernel boot flags, or by disabling HT/Multicore support in the 2140's bios.
