Just use that in the patch that hooks xsplash into the gdm startup
files:

if grep -qs splash /proc/cmdline && [ -x `/usr/bin/xsplash' ]; then
...

in both /etc/gdm/Init/Default and /etc/gdm/PreSession/Default
