Thanks, Brian, for the fast reply. The attached lspci shows we have a Gigabyte mb. I use a new sata drive as primary. I have my old ide hd and cdrw plugged into ide secondary. For Knoppix and Mepis, the ide drives show up as hdc (for the ide hard drive) and hdd for the cdrw. My ubu was originally a 6.1 rc, but has been updated about daily; Mint 2.1 and 2.2 also very current.
I should add that the ubu install has no entries fo hdc (hdc1,hdc5,hdc6,hdc7) or hdd. For cdrw or cdrom, Ubu looks for scd0, as I recall, but that's not in ubu's /dev either. I think that the Mepis clue may be significant, since it is also ubu based.
